The IRI assesses multiple dimensions of empathy, including perspective-taking, emotional concern, and personal distress, which are critical components of social engagement. Empathy facilitates meaningful social interactions, emotional regulation, and cooperative behavior, all of which are essential for maintaining neurological health. Strong empathetic skills are linked to better stress management, enhanced cognitive function, and reduced risks of social isolation and related mental health conditions. Conversely, deficits in empathy can contribute to interpersonal conflicts and heightened risks of neurological and psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
The IRI consists of 28 statements rated on a 5-point Likert scale, from "Does not describe me well" (1) to "Describes me very well" (5). Scores for each subscale range between 7 and 35, providing detailed insights into distinct dimensions of empathy.
