Healthy Eating Index

The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) is a standardized tool that evaluates how well an individual’s diet aligns with dietary guidelines, reflecting overall diet quality and its impact on health.
TARGET:
OVERVIEW

The HEI is a comprehensive metric used to assess the nutritional quality of a diet by examining its balance, variety, and adherence to recommended dietary guidelines. High HEI scores are associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes, all of which have indirect effects on neurological health. A high-quality diet, as indicated by a high HEI score, supports brain health through improved vascular function, reduced inflammation, and adequate intake of nutrients critical for cognition and mood regulation, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants.

MEASUREMENT

The HEI score is calculated based on 13 dietary components, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and saturated fats. Each component is scored from 0 to 10, depending on how closely the individual’s intake aligns with recommendations. Scores are summed for a total ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better adherence to dietary guidelines. The HEI is typically measured using dietary recall methods, food frequency questionnaires, or data from food logs. Tools like nutrition software or online HEI calculators can help individuals or researchers analyze diet quality and identify areas for improvement.

Questionnaire Scores
Although evidence suggests a correlation between questionnaire scores and neurological health, it does not prove causality or guarantee brain health. Always consult a qualified medical practitioner before making any decisions regarding your health or lifestyle.
